Suggesting the use of Aromatherapy to Treat Chronic Ailments

had enough?

Although conventional medicines are one of the most effective means of treatment, they are fraught with serious concerns. Their use, overuse and side effects is the cause of several life threatening consequences. Aspects such as over diagnosing, over treatment, and overdosing continue to negatively impact consumer health. The side effects of taking prescription medicines are not only limited to aches, dizziness and digestive discomfort, but may also severely affect functions of vital organs. These ill effects of conventional medicines call for greater focus on alternative therapies that avoid the use of harmful synthetic chemicals and correlated side effects.

In this project I explored the use of Aromatherapy as an alternative mode of treatment, due to its naturalness, historical use and relatively low cost of treatment. Through this investigation I designed a speculative aroma diffusing device to treat chronic ailments.

Ideation & Making

CASCADE

An aroma diffuser that diffuses a variety of essential oils known to treat chronic ailments.

UNIQUE DESIGN
While most of the aromatherapy products on the market are focused on occasional relaxation and wellness, Cascade intends to assimilate aromatherapy in the daily live's of people suffering from chronic conditions, requiring long term medication regimens. The device is designed to sit on a desk for the user to acquire the aromas. Treatment schedule may be customized according to user preferences or doctor's prescription. Cascade is travel friendly and can easily live in your hand luggage.

RATIONAL DOUBT
While the effectiveness of aromatherapy is not fully known scientifically, it has been used in folk medicine for a long time. As a result, this speculative design intends to inquire and test this historical aspect of aromaterapy, and shed light on the need for alternative modes of treatment.

Cascade was made using 3D modeling, printing, and electronics.
